Figure Studies in the 21st Century

A Solo Exhibition by Jerrold Ballaine

January 16—February 29, 2004

The Quicksilver Mine Co. presents a strong new series of figurative paintings by northern California artist Jerrold Ballaine beginning on January 16th. The show continues through February 29th.

Jerrold Ballaine, well known in the Bay Area for his lush landscape paintings, retired from the University of California at Berkeley in 1995 after 30 years as professor of art. He also served as director of the Berkeley Art Museum.

While based on classical figuration and art historical tradition, the work in this Show visualizes the human figure in a unique and contemporary manner. "Moving from more traditional representation to looser abstract format, these paintings demonstrate a play of light and shadow, line and color, and design and composition," says curator Robert Berg. "Those who take the time to study the work in this Show will experience their profound sensuality, and Ballaine's obvious delight in pure painting."

Recent solo exhibitions include Gallery "C" International in Paris, the Kuwait Museum, and the Ebert Gallery in San Francisco.
