The Painted Words of Jack Carter

Saturday, September 11, 2004, 2 to 5 p.m.

The illustrated aphorisms of Jack Carter will be featured in a very special three-hour Show on Saturday, September 11, 2004 at the Quicksilver Mine Co. in downtown Forestville. This afternoon Event will also include a reading by the Artist & Author at around
4 p.m.

Carter, a former San Francisco freelance fundraiser for politicians, the opera, and Hastings Law School, has written more than 1,000 aphorisms, many of which he has illustrated in over 65 one-of-a-kind artist books. Fifteen of these books will be featured in his Quicksilver Show.

His aphorisms include "He had perfect credentials. The only thing missing was everything else." Carter's only credentials are a Masters Degree from the Columbia School of Journalism, and an under five-minute mile in 1942. (His work was also featured at the San Francisco Cartoon Art Museum in 1998.)

Carter's other chief interest is researching the 562 bars and taverns in San Francisco, where he ferries to from his home in San Rafael on Fridays.

15 Jack Carter aphorisms:
  • We were not brought into this world to sing and dance but to buy wholesale and sell retail.
  • Sit me down, remove my tie, wake me up and tell me why.
  • The best things in life are free and so are the worst.
  • I am not resolute, but then who the hell is?
  • If there aren't miracles, what's next?
  • If I were God I'd make it easier.
  • It's vacation time when you feel homesick for every place but home.
  • We are stuck here and there is nothing we can do but complain.
  • High intelligence goes with modest self-esteem, like a majestic mountain beside a quiet mountain stream.
  • I want to love some, work some, play and dance some, but not by my lonesome.
  • Trust is the best brand of optimism: You bet everyone to win.
  • Motherhood is our bravest monument and the only lasting proof that goodness exists.
  • The art of happiness is the science of continuous discovery.
  • She said there is no God and Freud is a joke. Take that and roll it, smoke it and repress it.
