Geometric Iconography:
esse quam videri

New Paintings and Collages by Harley

November 18—January 1, 2012

The Quicksilver Mine Co. presents a one-man exhibition of new work by Sonoma County painter and collage artist Harley beginning November 18th. This show, titled esse quam videri ("to be rather than to seem") opens with an artist reception on Saturday, November 19th from 4—6pm.

The work in this show, most completed in the last half of 2011, presents Harley's essential geometric iconography: color, chiaroscuro, composition, rhythm and surface, all underscoring the basic language of painting. Introducing reflective elements such as glitter and metallic papers into both his paintings and collages, he also enjoys the challenge of using materials that are often thought of as "tacky or cheap" in a more formal context, allowing the viewer to "appreciate the inherent beauty of these less traditional materials."

Also known for his artistamps and his work in sculptural ceramics, Harley's professional artistic career spans more than fifty years. He has curated, taught and consulted nationally and internationally, and has exhibited his own work in the US and Canada, Central and South America, Europe, Japan, New Zealand, South Africa and Russia.

esse quam videri continues in the Gallery through January 1st.
